Informal Letter Writing (Types, Format, Examples)

What is an Informal letter?
Personal letters are also called informal letters which can be written to family members, parents, siblings, children, relatives, friends and acquaintances.

👉They can be written for various reasons like to invite a friend for vacations, to inform the parents about the result, to know the health of ones grandparents, to bless a newly-wed cousin, etc.

Format of Informal Letter
An informal letter usually has six parts
1) The address
The sender’s/writer’s address is written at the top left-hand corner of the page.

2) The date
The date is written in full below the address (12 October 20___) but the name of the month should never be written in short [January as Jan.(x).]

3) The salutation
The salutation is written on the left-hand side of the page below the date. It varies for different persons and depends on closeness with the person addressed.
👉For friends we write: Dear Sneha, My dear Sona
👉For members of the family we write: Dear Father, My dear Mother
✅(Note: While writing informal letters we do not write the name, designation and address of the person addressed, nor do we write the subject.

4)The body
This is written in paragraphs.
🔵The first paragraph is an introduction which states the reason for writing the letter.
🟠The second paragraph gives all the related information and the third paragraph is the conclusion.

5)The subscription
This is written after the body of the letter and is a courteous leave-taking before the letter ends. It is written according to the relation with the person addressed or the purpose behind writing the letter. (Yours is written without an apostrophe.)
The details are given below:👇

(a) To relatives we write – Your affectionate son/brother/sister or Yours affectionately
(b) To friends we write – Your sincerely, Yours lovingly or Yours affectionately

6)The signature
The writer’s name or signature is written (with designation in formal or official letters) below the subscription. The address of the person to whom the letter is addressed is written on the envelope. This should be given in full, must be clear and correct (The PIN CODE should preferably be mentioned). These days we do not use punctuation marks when we write the address, date, the salutation or the subscription. All these begin right next to the margin.
