A **noun** is a **word that names a person, place, thing, idea, or quality**.

🧠 **Example**:

* Rani (person)
* Odisha (place)
* Chair (thing)
* Honesty (idea)

## 📚 **TYPES OF NOUNS**

There are **5 main types** of nouns:

### 1. **Proper Noun**

A **Proper Noun** is the **name of a particular person, place, or organization**. It always **begins with a capital letter**.

✅ **Examples**:

* Mahatma Gandhi
* India
* English
* CHSE Board
* Bhubaneswar

🔹 **Note**: Common nouns become proper nouns when they name specific things.
👉 *River* = common noun, but *Ganga* = proper noun.

### 2. **Common Noun**

A **Common Noun** is a **general name** for a person, place, or thing in a **class or group**.

✅ **Examples**:

* Girl
* City
* School
* Book
* Country

📝 These are **not capitalized** unless they begin a sentence.

### 3. **Collective Noun**

A **Collective Noun** is the **name of a group** of people, animals, or things taken together as one unit.

✅ **Examples**:

* A team of players
* A bunch of grapes
* A fleet of ships
* A class of students
* A herd of cattle

💡 **Tip**: Collective nouns are **singular in form** but refer to a **group**.

### 4. **Abstract Noun**

An **Abstract Noun** refers to something that **cannot be touched or seen**. It names **ideas, feelings, qualities, or states**.

✅ **Examples**:

* Honesty
* Love
* Freedom
* Strength
* Childhood

💡 These are things you can **feel or think about**, but **cannot touch**.

### 5. **Material Noun**

A **Material Noun** is the name of a **substance or material** used to make other things.

✅ **Examples**:

* Gold
* Wood
* Iron
* Water
* Cotton
* Milk

💡 It answers the question: “What is it made of?”
