What are Determiners?
Determiners are words placed before nouns to provide more information about the quantity, identity, or ownership of the noun. They help us understand which or how many things or people we are talking about.
🧩 Types of Determiners with Examples
1. Articles
👉These show whether we’re talking about something specific or general.
✓Definite Article: (the)
Example: The moon is bright tonight.
✓Indefinite Articles: (a, an)
Examples:
I saw a cat in the garden.
He is an honest man.
2. Demonstratives
👉They point out specific things.
(this, that, these, those)
Examples:
This book is interesting.
I don’t like those shoes.
3. Possessives
👉Show ownership or relationship.
(my, your, his, her, its, our, their)
Examples:
My mother is a teacher.
They sold their car.
4. Quantifiers
👉Tell us how much or how many.
(some, any, many, much, few, little, several, enough)
Examples:
I have some money.
There are many apples in the basket.
5. Numbers (Cardinals & Ordinals)
👉Show exact or order number.
✓Cardinals (one, two, three...)
Example: I have two dogs.
✓Ordinals (first, second, third...)
Example: He came first in the race.
6. Distributives
👉Refer to members of a group individually or in parts.
(each, every, either, neither)
Examples:
Each student must bring their ID card.
Neither option is good.
7. Interrogatives
👉Used in questions.
(what, which, whose)
Examples:
Which color do you prefer?
Whose pen is this?
